The discography of my life... footage of as many years of favorites I can think of.

The discography of my life... footage of as many years of favorites I can think of.

I'm gonna say my first favorite song, that wasn't a childrens song, was "Sugar, Sugar" by The Archies.
My granparents had this mini record player and I would play the 45 at their house and just sing along. I'm gonna have to say I was about 3 years old at the time... possibly 4.

Here's the music:

The next favs I can remember was "You're the one that I want" and "Hopelessly Devoted" from the Grease soundtrack. I had the 8-track. lol. 1978

Around the same time - Journey's "Wheel in the Sky"

1980 - I was 8 by then, huh. lol. First one of my favs around this time was Blondies "Rapture"

1982 Yes, I loved Michael Jackson's "Billy Jean"

Also in 1982, when my world changed forever as far as the line between liking a band and becoming completely and utterly obsessed... The time where every penny was spent on Bop Magazine, Buttons, T-shirts and any other item I could get my little hands on. Duran Duran "Hungry like a wolf" and"Save a prayer".

And the song I STILL love but have no clue what it's about. Men Without Hats "Safety Dance"

1983 became the identification of copying style of artist... Madonna entered my world with "Lucky Star" and bangles, hair do-dads and cool skirts became my theme. LOL, I even had the choreography from the video down.

Oh and can't forget Spandau Ballet "True"

I'm gonna stick Berlin "Metro" here in 83 because I remember watching this MV3 that they played on. I fucking loved MV3 and Richard Blade.

1984 - Still obsessed with Duran Duran, but expanding my tastes, I discovered Thompson Twins, "Doctor Doctor" and U2
"Sunday Bloody Sunday" and "New Years Day"

hmm, I think 1985-ish... moved into the dance music. Yup... Debbie Deb "Look out weekend" (I'm using an anime video here because well, ummm there's nothing from the 80s there??? I guess there wasn't a music video?) We'll just gloss over 1985 here since you have probably guessed it was a more embarassing music period for me.

1986 began my journey into more alternative/punk music... Here I met Love and Rockets "Kundalini Express" and a really hot guy who loved the song too. =) I also discovered The Cure "Close to me" Oh and The Smiths "What difference does it make"!

And last but not least, one of the best fucking albums ever, if you don't own it... yea. The Cult - LOVE - "She sells sanctuary"

In 1987 I discovered one of my favorite bands to this day, Depeche Mode "Behind the wheel" and made sure to get EVERY casette relased. And so began my obsession with electronic music (Actually synth's) Marting Gore and Nick Rhodes made my Grandparents have to get me a Yamaha Synthesizer cause I was gonna be just like them... only a girl.

1988 I think I was pretty moody then... lol

Erasure "Sometimes"

New Order "Blue Monday"

1989/1990 I found Nine Inch Nails "Head like a hole", Jane's Addiction "Caught Stealing" and Red Hot Chili Peppers "Higher Ground"

1991

Sarah McLachlan "Into the Fire"

1994 Tori Amos "God"

Sound Garden "Black Hole Sun"

As I'm writing this.. the 90's are just pretty uninspiring. No wonder everyone loves the 80's so much! Okay. I'm done for now.

OCD Song of the week... sorta

Alright, so nothing in particular grabbed me by the jugular and said, "You're mine bitch!"
But since I'm gonna spotlight something every week, I figured I'll spotlight something new for me that I do like.

Here it is:

Black Light Burns - Stop a Bullet

I like the industrial noise and techno interjections (inflections perhaps?)

I also highly recommend "Cruel Melody" by Black Light Burns... as a matter of fact... that one gets me a little OCD on it. ;)

ATC - Around the world... Makes me happy

Ummm, yea... I've decided that ATC is the new ABBA. I can't help but feel better every time I listen to this damn song. Guilty pleasure time here and I'm confessing to my 2 readers. But seriously, if you're just feeling kinda blah, give it a try.

LOL. That's got to be the lamest video ever except for maybe...

Upcoming review - Black Light Burns & Cage9

Oddly enough I won tickets to see Black Light Burns and Cage9 at the Roxy.
I recalled the name Black Light Burns because I made a point to remember the name, I liked the song "Lie". So when KROQ sent a bulletin saying text to win, I thought, "Why not".

Anyway, Black Light Burns is fronted by Wes Borland of Limp Bizkit. Don't worry, they sound nothing like Limp. an interesting little factoid about Wes is that he at one point was faced with the decision to re-join Limp Bizkit or join Nine Inch Nails (NIN). He chose Limp Bizkit over NIN... ummm yea. Not sure how I feel about that, but BLB is good and he'd probably would have the project had he joined NIN.

K. I'll take pix and write a review.

In the mean time, here's a video to keep you entertained... Lie - Black Light Burns

Zeitgeist and Artivist Awards - Not a concert, but noteworthy

American Heritage New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy, Third Edition - Cite This Source - Share This

Zeitgeist [(tseyt-geyst, zeyt-geyst)]

"The general moral, intellectual, and cultural climate of an era; Zeitgeist is German for “time-spirit.” For example, the Zeitgeist of England in the Victorian period included a belief in industrial progress, and the Zeitgeist of the 1980s in the United States was a belief in the power of money and the many ways in which to spend it."

I attended the Artivist Awards on Sunday, Nov 11th, it was definitely and interesting event. I also went to a screening of Zeitgeist Saturday night and was privileged to see the great panel who inspired and created the movie.

Zeitgeist is a must see for everyone who lives on this planet... simply put, if you value your freedom, then you better make yourself aware of what's really going on. The time for Ostrich mentality is over.

You can view the movie here at zeitgeistmovie.com

After the awards ceremony and festivities were over, I had the privilege to hang out with the creator and his family at Mel's diner. I have some lovely photos that I won't share to protect the brave.

In speaking with Peter, I told him how wonderful that he put that body of work together and that people are becoming aware, but what are we going to do about it? He mentioned some possibilities, and I plan on keeping in contact with him. Maybe we can start a new movement? That would be awesome.

To all of you warrior spirits out there, it is time to join forces. Keep your eyes and ears open for the opportunity to make a change for good.

Genitorturers ... yes, you heard me. HOB 2007

Ha ha, you can only imagine huh? Ha ha, no, you can't.

You know, I think I'll skip the commentary. The video basically speaks for itself but is relatively tame compared to some of the song performances. This following video is NOT from the show I attended. Unfortunately I couldn't find any footage. =(

Oh, I DID have fun at the show and give it a big recommendation for those who are more adventurous.

Marilyn Manson and Slayer - Verizon 2007

Oh why the hell not. Since we're taking care of the backlog eh?

Marilyn Manson and Slayer, Verizon Amphitheater 8/24/07. We got there late, thankfully missed most of Slayer. No offense to the Slayer fans out there on our lovely little planet but I'm not a fan. What I DID hear of Slayer was tantamount to taking an icepick and gently pressing it, very slowly into my brain... yea. Bang on head bangers, bang on.

Marilyn Manson was a decent show. I imagine that he's tamed down a bit in recent years? Cause I definitely didn't find any shock value to his show, nothing like I had imagined it would be anyway. He really is quite a showman though, with use of interesting props, sets, costumes and lighting.

The sound quality was ok, the usual "verizon" AKA Irvine Meadows sound... Not the best, definitely not the worst. Again, the show was good, my only complaint was it's length, it seemed to short, I think he only played an hour set. =(

I scrounged up some video:

"Fight Song" - Marilyn Manson

"Sweet Dreams" - Marilyn Manson

"Just a car crash away" - Marilyn Manson

Confirmed, tentative and wishlist concerts...

So I'm terrible at remembering concert dates and always find out I forgot about something after the fact. Here's my list (mainly for me, so I can keep track of stuff...)

Potential: November 17th, Las Vegas - Flyleaf
Confirmed: December 15th, The Grove - Tori Amos (I really hope she has better sound engineers than The Cult did!)
Wishlist, hopefully not "wishful thinking": May 31st, Hollywood Bowl - The Cure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Cult - The Grove August 3rd 07

Yes, I'm REALLY backlogged, but I'm only reviewing some of my backlogged concerts. I mean shit, how could I leave out The Cult???

Standing room only GA, fairly close to the stage but not nearly as close as I would have wanted to be. We actually moved a bit further back and to right of center stage so I could hear Ian. I really want to see them play a better venue. The mix was terrible in that Ian didn't stand out very well at all and I LOVE LOVE LOVE his voice. That man can sing to me anytime!

Ian and Duffy were fantastic! Duffy has the most beautiful guitars and I'd like to marry one of them, if I were into inanimate objects anyway. Ian threw several tambourines into the audience and I must admit I was very envious of those who caught one. Next time, slighly left of stage and far enough that the trajectory would be get one to ME next time!!!

Anyway, here's some clips from that show, not taken by me. Unfortunately, the sound quality of the video closely approximates that of the sound of the venue.

"She Sells Sanctuary" - The Cult

"Love Removal Machine" - The Cult

"Here Comes the Rain" - The Cult

"Nirvana" - The Cult

Muse and Rage Against the Machine at Vegoose '07

October 28th, 2007. Las Vegas (more like Henderson) Nevada. Vegoose, the land of Woodstock revivification, not really, but kind of. The bands, Muse and Rage Against the Machine. Me, a girl who hadn't yet seen RATM and had wanted to for quite sometime. FINALLY, got to go, with the bonus of seeing Muse! I wouldn't say I knew much about Muse really except for songs I had heard on KROQ, or at least that's what I thought.

Appearantly the years and years of deluging my head with radio yielded a greater recognizable discography for me than I had realized. Like I said, I came to see Rage and well, I left madly in love with Muse.

Muse are:

Matthew Bellamy
Dominic Howard, and Chris Wolstenholme.

Muse takes the stage, We're in close, not as close as we'd like to be I'm sure, but closer than most. Muse starts to play and I'm immediately in awe, tis a rare moment. The sound is AMAZING! I will reiterate that, AMAZING! Impeccable mix for an outdoor arena, should I say, "field". Matt is, well, gorgeous and OMFG talented and a half! *swoons* yea. As stated, I thought I knew only a few songs of theirs, but as it turned out, I knew about 95% of the set! Which was ohhh so nice!

Matt, (sorry, gonna ramble about him) has one of the coolest collections of guitars I've seen and man can he fucking play em! Seriously, I don't know of any front men like him, at least in a long while. I HIGHLY recommend checking them out if you get the chance.

Here's some video from the show (not taken by yours truly) after the vids is the Rage review.

One of my favorite Muse songs "Hysteria" - Muse

"Stockholm Syndrome" - Muse

"Knights of Cydonia" - Muse

Alright, so like I said earlier, I initially came to see Rage Against the Machine. And honestly, after seeing Muse I felt somewhat deflated when it came to see them. Not sure why, I think that kind of like having a good man and not having him, you feel kind of ruined for other men. Yea, kind of like that.

I bowed out of the front, I got put over the wall for the first time ever at a concert... ha ha, kind of fun. I decided I had been crushed enough during Muse and I was feeling kind of faint from heat and dehydration plus I had to pee, had been holding it since before Muse. I left my partner there deciding that the crowd was going to get to be too much for me during Rage.

It turns out that the crowd indeed went off as people who were in front later joined me in the back of the crowd. I just kind of stood off on the outskirts of the Rage civilization and sucked it all in. They were incredible, don't get me wrong... I think I have just been desensitized to the yelling screaming type artist at concerts. I have a fairly extensive list of those that I've seen, seeing people bloodied from the pit is nothing new.

The crowd was definitely electrified by the performance. And singing in unison during certain moments in song was definitely fun, especially with a middle finger flying up in the air... "fuck the man"

That's why I wanted to see them, for that mini protest, ha, I had forgotten until this very moment. Retrospectively, I had a blast.

PS: They cut their set short by an hour!!! A nice big WTF?

Here's some video

"Testify" - RATM

"Freedom 2" - RATM

Morrissey Show at the Palladium - Tuesday oct 9th

Well, as per usual, I FINALLY got to see one of my favorite artists a decade or so later than I would have liked... BUT as per usual, it was amazing!
Morrissey has really got it going on. I was fortunate enough to see him up close (nearly squished and impaled by limbs) it was so worth the resulting bruises.

A true crooner and dare I say "Thespian" Morrissey delivered an energetic performance to his fans. I was very impressed by his live vocals, he sounded, well like Morrissey; not just the now Morrissey, but the Morrissey of back in the day. And oh how in love I fell.

Back to the beginning: His opening act, the one who's name people couldn't recall and frankly I can't either so I'll skip trying, was terrible... The thing about it is, I don't think her music, nor vocals were all that bad. She just had zero stage presence, it seemed as though she just wanted to do her thing and get off of the stage. Her only interaction with the audience was a snarky comment along the lines of almost being done and we'll be happy about that. I was like "WHOA! did she just say that?" Umm yea.

Moving on... the stage goes dark and we wait for what seemed like an eternity, me bouncy and giddy as a school girl on crack, my 'friend' I think was laughing at my dorkdom. Suddenly "Wham!" the curtain drops and Morrisseys stage is revealed... I lost control and screamed like, well, a fan. Sadly, there was still a bit more waiting before he started. I felt a little dumb for my premature scream but knew I wasn't the only one who lost it.

When Morrissey FINALLY came out, and began to sing, I started to cry... yes, I cried.

The performance was enthusiastic and inviting... so inviting that seemingly every young hispanic Morrissey "LOVER" took their turn to surf their way to the stage. And oh, the mayhem that ensued when Morrissey took off his yellow (presumably silk) shirt and threw it into the audience. The fighting over that went on for quite a while. I wonder how the winner feels about it? Ha ha, I could guess!

Here's a video clip, not sure which night, but it gives you the idea of how intense the crowd was.

At the end of the show, the guitarist walked to the front of the stage and threw out a few (mmm, I'd say 5) guitar picks. One of them flew right at me and I sensed it was near my feet. The guy in front of me bent down searching almost under me for it. I stomped my feet in defiance and in hopes of one of my feet landing atop of the pick. I pushed the guy away and said, "You're not going to get it, it's under my foot." I had NO clue what was going on down there. The guy finally gets up, hand clenched shut, I thought he had won and I felt a small feeling of loss, but then he opened his hand, revealing nothing. I regained my confidence that the pick could STILL be somewhere under me. As the crowd disbanded, I looked down at the ground around my feet and saw a little tiny flash of yellow sticking out from underneath my left shoe... HA HA, VICTORIOUS ME! I got a guitar pick. =D

Ok, here's some music video clips (not taken by yours truly) of the show - Not necessarily the night I attended.

Enjoy!

From Oct 9th show, the night I attended - "How soon is now?"

The 12th

What a screamer! Flyleaf

I'm quickly growing fond of the band Flyleaf. Lacey Mosley's girlish voice which can turn to a blood curdling scream on a dime is a wonderful mix. See video below and you'll see what I mean!

Flyleaf members are:

Lacey Mosley — vocals
Sameer Bhattacharya — guitar
Jared Hartmann — guitar
Pat Seals — bass
James Culpepper — drums

Lyrics to "I'm so sick"

I will break into your thoughts
With what's written on my heart
I will break, break

I'm so sick,
Infected with where I live
Let me live without this
Empty bliss,
Selfishness
I'm so sick
I'm so sick

If you want more of this
We can push out, sell out, die out
So you'll shut up
And stay sleeping
With my screaming in your itching ears

I'm so sick,
Infected with where I live
Let me live without this
Empty bliss,
Selfishness
I'm so sick
I'm so sick

Hear it, I'm screaming it
You're heeding to it now

Hear it! I'm screaming it!
You tremble at this sound

You sink into my clothes
And this invasion
Makes me feel
Worthless, hopeless, sick

I'm so sick,
Infected with where I live
Let me live without this
Empty bliss,
Selfishness
I'm so sick
I'm so sick

I'm so sick
Infected with where I live
Let me live without this
Empty bliss, selfishness
I'm so
I'm so sick
I'm so
I'm so sick

OCD Song of the week - Rusted Wheel, Silversun Pickups

The first in weekly installments of OCD song of the week. What is OCD song of the week? Well, I'll tell ya. It's that song that you hear and listen to it for a week straight until you feel like vomiting. OCD in case no one knows is a made up disorder titled "Obsessive Compulsive Disorder" ... Some songs make me a little OCD over them. This weeks pick is:

Silversun Pickups - Rusted Wheel

Why am I listening to this song over and over and over and over and over again? Well, it's the smooth and rich guitar sounds, haunting melody and a cool 70's vibe that's not so 70's that you feel like gagging. The vocals are smooth and silvery, perfect for just chilling out to. Not a hard rock song, not a soft rock song... just a great damn song with a nicely strummed guitar. Check it out! Lyrics below.

Music and Peace!

Silversun Pickups Rusted Wheel Lyrics
So you can’t hold a star in your hand though
at least you can hold on to another plan

rusted wheel planted still

i can tell it's summer from the
size of the bugs that fly through my window
flying through my window

rusted wheel planted still
rusted wheel can't move on

i can tell it's winter from the
size of the lump in my throat
got a lump in my throat

rusted wheel planted still
rusted wheel can't move on

and it feels just like the ground
but trapped in another way
just still in the ground

and it feels just like the ground
and trapped in another way
just still in the ground

so you can't hold a star in your hand though
at least you can move on to that better plan

rusted wheel planted still
rusted wheel can't move on...
